Youth Mental Health First Aid USA is an 8-hour training designed to teach adults how to help an adolescent (age 12-18) who is experiencing a mental health or addictions challenge or is in crisis. Topics covered include anxiety, depression, substance use, disorders in which psychosis may occur, disruptive behavior disorders (including AD/HD), and eating disorders.
Earn a Certification
The completion of the 8-hour course earns participants Youth Mental Health First Aider Certification through the National Council for Behavioral Health, which is valid for three years. Youth Mental Health First Aid is primarily designed for adults who regularly interact with young people. Certification is ideal for parents, family members, caregivers, teachers, school staff, peers, neighbors, health and human services workers, and other caring citizens. Anyone is able and encouraged to take this course.
Course Format & Requirements
Courses are offered in person and virtually. Please review carefully for your selection.
Once you register for a Youth Mental Health First Aid course, you will receive self-guided mandatory coursework within a few weeks of your training date that you will need to complete prior to your facilitator-led class.
One or two certified instructors lead each course and follow a national evidence-based curriculum. Classes will consist of 30 people or less. All participants must be age 18 and older.

By signing up for a VIRTUAL course, you are committing to a five and a half hour, facilitator-led, group training course taking place via Zoom on the date you select, and you are confirming that you will complete the three hours of self-guided mandatory coursework (which will be sent to you by email within one week of your scheduled class date) on your own time before your group training. For the IN-PERSON course, you are committing to an eight-hour, facilitator-led group training at the location provided below. If you are unable to make these commitments, we ask that you leave this spot open for someone who can and check back at a later time to register for a date that will work better for your schedule.
Please note that classes are subject to cancelation if the minimum number of participants isn’t met, per MHFA national standards. In the event of a cancellation for this reason, you will be notified three days prior to your scheduled course date and offered alternate dates to select from for rescheduling.
